In Paul Aiello’s installment of ‘Abstract Dichotomies’ the artist examines memory and the innate relationship between what remains and what is lost. Aiello’s unique artistic process involves much physical interaction with the canvas. Each piece is made up of thousands of images applied to the canvas, then removed leaving only impressions and fragments of what once was. The result is vibrant and abstract and, revealing images whether through process or imagination. Each piece creates a dialogue regarding the complexities of modern urban existence and the unique social, environmental and political interaction illustrated through memory – the conscious and the unconscious.

to be a part, yet remain apart

urban existence entails the navigation of the dichotomy of being a part of a collective, yet remain an individual.
as marienetti and the futurists were more destructive, we embrace community while exhaling the individual and the examination of their own existence - and existence in general.
modernity is ruled by technology, speed and the media – beneath this is the struggle of the individual.

Aiello’s work is based in pastiche through his unique photo-collage technique.  The work is developed through Aiello’s interaction with the canvass – through what remains and what is lost.

Aiello reverses the individual’s inevitable social role – ultimately, as consumer of their environment – by placing this in the background.  Overtop, Aiello applies his free-expressionism – boundless, destructive and re-constrictive.

The art is progressive and exhibits unusual depth.  Technically, we see the artist tirelessly working with the canvass.  This is the direct struggle between the individual and modernity – directly and boldly.  Visually, it is compelling and could be read in a myriad of ways – whether implied, derived or otherwise.

As a young artist, Aiello has developed his avant-garde technique in abstract form as a student at the OCAD and more recently in his Abstract Dichotomies series.
